As a result of Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma’s batting destruction in Johannesburg, several records were tumbled as India created history in the 4th T20I.
It was a breathtaking display by India’s top-order with Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson both scoring a century as they set a mammoth 284-run target against South Africa in the fourth and final T20I at the Wanderer’s Stadium in Johannesburg.
South Africa was left reeling as the two Indian batters went on to set a 200+ run partnership as India showcased their power-hitting prowess and made them look effortless.

First Player To Score 3 T20I Hundreds In A Calendar Year
India’s opening batter, Sanju Samson created history in Johannesburg as he smashed his third T20I hundred. He now holds the rare feat of having scored three T20I hundreds in a calendar year. He scored a century against Bangladesh in Hyderabad, followed by a ton against South Africa in Durban and now 109 in Johannesburg as well.

Among full-member nations, the pair of Samson and Tilak Varma now hold the record for the highest partnership with an unbeaten 210-run stand against the Proteas on Friday. The Indian duo eclipsed the pair of Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam from Pakistan and their unbeaten 203-run stand against England in 2022.
1st Indian, 2nd Overall To Score 2 Hundreds In A T20I Series
Samson also now holds the rare feat of being the first Indian batter to have scored two T20I hundreds in a bilateral series. He is also the second batter in T20I history to do the same. The first person to do so was England’s wicketkeeper-batter, Phil Salt who had smashed two centuries against the West Indies in 2023.
2nd Indian, 5th Overall To Score Two Consecutive Centuries
Tilak now joins the likes of Samson, Salt, South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw and the Frenchman Gustav McKeon to have scored two consecutive T20I centuries. The young left-hander had scored a sensational hundred in Centurion which was his first in the format and now improved on it with an unbeaten knock of 120 in Johannesburg as well.

Sanju followed by Tilak now share a unique feat of having scored two T20I hundreds against South Africa. The Indian duo have had a stellar set of performances against the Proteas and are amongst the leading run-scorers in the ongoing bilateral series.

As a result of India’s batting carnage, they now set a new record for the most number of sixes hit in an innings amongst full-member teams. The Men in Blue smashed 23 sixes against the Proteas which eclipsed the previous record shared by the West Indies against South Africa in 2023, and India against Bangladesh in 2024 with 22 sixes each.

Tilak also joins Sanju Samson and the former Indian T20I skipper, Rohit Sharma to now hold the unique feat of having smashed 10 sixes in a T20I innings. Rohit was the first to do the feat after smashing 10 sixes against Sri Lanka in 2017. Samson followed it up with the monstrous knock in Durban and now Tilak joins the both of them.

Tilak and Sanju’s monstrous partnership, coupled with Abhishek Sharma’s brief cameo in the powerplay, resulted in the Proteas conceding the biggest total in a T20I innings. This went past the previous record-holder, West Indies who smashed 252 runs at Centurion in September 2022.
