The plot thickens for Rohit Sharma as India head coach Gautam Gambhir stated that the decision on whether the Indian skipper makes the cut for India’s playing XI for the final Test in Sydney has not yet been made, according to reports from the pre-match press conference in Sydney on Thursday.
Rohit has come under immense scrutiny with his seemingly abysmal run of form in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy so far. The skipper has failed to make a sizeable impact on any front, especially with the bat.
Rohit’s woes with the bat have led to a dismal record. As per ESPNcricinfo, he has managed just 31 runs at 6.20 in this series, which now stands as the lowest average for any touring captain in a Test series Down Under (minimum 5 innings).
With talks of retirement looming around in the shadows, following intense scrutiny for his leadership in the long format as well, it seems possible that something as drastic as dropping the skipper might actually come to life.
Gambhir has also kept his lips sealed on the situation, but had stated in the pre-match presser in Sydney today that the decision regarding Rohit’s inclusion in the Playing XI for the final Test.
“We will take the Playing XI call after looking at the pitch tomorrow,” stated head coach Gambhir at the presser, according to reports from TOI.
The importance of the winning the final Test in Sydney could not be understated for India. Not only do their hopes of tying up and retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy hangs in the balance, but so does their ever-so fleeting chance of qualifying for the World Test Championship final against South Africa as well.
Anything short of a win in the final Test at Sydney, starting tomorrow, will result in disqualification from contention for the final spot, handing the same over to Australia along with the coveted Broder-Gavaskar Trophy.
