Sunil Gavaskar unpleased with India’s performance in BGT 2024-25
India losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years is a bitter pill to swallow, and legend Sunil Gavaskar did not hesitate to express his frustration. The experts and fans are equally gutted to see a series full of struggles and humiliation. India stamped their authority in Perth with a dominant 295-run win, but Australia’s comeback thereafter weathered India’s campaign Down Under. A 1-3 series loss meant India are no longer in the race to the World Test Championship final, as the Australians will now face South Africa on 15 June at Lord’s.
Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar was asked about India’s pre-series preparation coming into the five-match series. Sporting a frustrated look on his face, the former Indian captain said it’s useless to give an opinion on camera.
“Hum kaun hain? Hum ko to cricket aati hi nahi hai. Hum to bas television ke liye baatein karte hain, humari kaun suntan hai (Who are we? We don’t know cricket. We just speak just for the sake of TV and get money, don’t listen to us, we’re nothing). Listen from one ear, remove from another,” Gavaskar said on air.
The target of 162 could have been trickier for Australia had India’s new Test captain, Jasprit Bumrah, been in a position to bowl despite painful back spasms. But once Virat Kohli led the team out, it was as clear as the Sydney skyline that defending the total would be next to impossible.
Bumrah deservedly walked away with the Player of the Series honour for his astonishing haul of 32 wickets in five matches. But it was hardly a consolation for the shambolic team performance that India managed, showing resilience only in brief phases.
While Australia will be eyeing a second successive WTC mace, it will be the first time since the event’s inception that India will not be in the final. The team had finished runner-up in the previous two summit clashes.
