Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar feels Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal can be the next Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for India in ODI cricket. Gill, who was named as India’s vice-captain for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England as well as the ICC Champions Trophy on January 18, sits at No. 3 position in the ICC ODI batter’s ranking. Since making his international debut for India against New Zealand at Seddon Park in Hamilton on January 31, 2019, Gill has played 47 matches and has 2328 runs to his name. On the other hand, Jaiswal is yet to make his ODI debut but has impressed everyone with his performances in 19 Tests and 23 T20Is played so far.
The left-handed batter is also part of India’s squad for the upcoming series against England at home and the Champions Trophy and could make his 50-over debut next month.
During a Star Sports show, Manjrekar, who has now donned the hat of an expert, was asked who, according to him, can be the next Rohit and Virat with the bat in the next 10 years. And he replied by mentioning Gill and Jaiswal’s name.
“I think Shubman Gill will continue to work in white ball. He already has a 200 and all his records. We haven’t seen Yashasvi yet (in ODIs). We’ve seen him in the Test. But for him, that world is there to capture. He has it. If he gets a chance, he’ll capture it,” Manjrekar said.
Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar was also part of the same show, and he agreed with Manjrekar’s picks.
“They (Gill and Jaiswal) bat at the top of the order. One gets the most chance to score there. They are in the same age group that Rohit and Virat were in in 2013. Yashasvi is a bit younger; Shubman is a bit older. But the gap is of a year or two. And both of them have made a great start in international cricket. So, I think they are the new generation trendsetters for the Indian team.”
Gill and Jaiswal were last seen in action for their respective domestic sides, Punjab and Mumbai, in Bengaluru and Mumbai, respectively, during the sixth round of group stage Ranji Trophy matches.
