India’s vice-captain and opening batter, Shubman Gill, looks to learn from his previous mistakes as the Men in Blue gear up for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 summit clash against New Zealand, set to be held in Dubai on Sunday.
The upcoming final will be Gill’s second in his ODI career. He was also opening the batting during India’s heartbreaking loss to Australia in Ahmedabad in the ICC ODI World Cup 2024. He was unable to make an impact as he scored just four runs as India went on to lose the match by six wickets.
Since then, Gill has established himself as one of the best batters in the format, taking the top spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batters as well. Reflecting on the loss against Australia, Gill suggested that he can take more time to get himself set for a big score rather than rushing himself.
“Obviously some nerves in that match,” ICC quoted Gill as saying ahead of India’s date with New Zealand in Sunday’s decider.
“(I learned) a lot of things. It was my first ICC Final … I was very excited (It felt like) I was losing time to dominate in that game. I think in big ICC knockout matches, you can give yourself a little bit more time than you think.”
Looking back at India’s performances through the years, the Men in Blue have certainly been a force to be reckoned with across all formats. The side has made it to the finals in every competition since 2023. This includes the World Test Championship final for the 2021-23 cycle, the 2023 ODI World Cup, the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025.
But despite making it all the way, the side have only managed to win the T20 World Cup, and Gill hopes that getting their hands on the Champions Trophy would be the perfect way to bring an end to this year’s ODI season.
“We lost (the World Cup Final) in ‘23 and then won in the T20 World Cup (in 2024). So, I think we have got good momentum going with us in this tournament. It’s going to be a really exciting game for us and definitely, if we are able to win this one, I think it would be a great way to end this format this year,” Gill said.
“It’s a very big opportunity for us, and in general, in any ICC tournament or any ICC event that happens, we have a lot of responsibility, a lot of pressure from our fans. And the last two ICC tournaments that we have played, we went on to (make the Final),” he added.
