Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev, who led India to the World Cup win in 1983, has offered important advice to Indian players in the wake of the team’s shocking 0-3 defeat in the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand. For the first time in history, India suffered a whitewash in a home series that featured three or more Tests. The Indian batters struggled to score big runs against the Kiwi bowlers, and it invited a lot of criticism for senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who looked totally off-colour in the home series.

While Kapil didn’t mention any individual’s name, he came with crucial advice by saying that if a player is going through a rough patch, then the only way he can improve is by going back to the basics and practicing more.

“Go back to the basics. Practice and practice and practice. If you say I will improve by sitting in the room, then it is not going to happen. If you are going through a rough time, just practice more. The more you practice, the better it will be for you,” Kapil told CricketNext during an interview on the sidelines of the inaugural event of the Night Golf Festival at Jaypee Greens Golf Course in Greater Noida.

Kapil is the face of golf in Delhi-NCR, and he has excelled as an amateur golfer after his retirement from international cricket. While discussing his switch from cricket to golf, he said that he has enjoyed every minute of playing golf and added that had he started playing golf in the early days of his career, he would have scored at least 1000-2000 runs more.

“I enjoyed every minute of playing golf. It’s not easy to leave one sport and start enjoying the other, but I feel so happy that I started playing this sport. Nothing is easy (transition from playing cricket to golf). You have to work hard. I started playing golf at the age of 36-37. So, I had a little more challenge. But I had a sports mind. So, it wasn’t that difficult. Maybe it’s very difficult for some people. But sports come easy to me. I enjoy it,” Kapil said.

“I think concentration mein improvement aati hai (by playing golf). If I tell you something, had I played golf while playing cricket, I would have scored at least 1000-2000 runs. Because in golf the focus is for one second when you hit the ball, and it’s the same in cricket too. It complements each other,” he added.
