Star Indian opening batter Gongadi Trisha created history on Tuesday, January 28, by becoming the first player in the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup to score a century. The right-handed batter achieved the feat during India’s Super Six match against Scotland, which is currently underway at Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur.
The 19-year-old crossed the 100-run mark with a single on the last ball of the 18th over, which was bowled by Scotland spinner Maisie Maceira. She needed 53 balls to score 100 runs. Trisha remained unbeaten on 110 runs from 59 balls and helped India post a total of 208 runs on the board for the loss of one wicket in 20 overs.
During her stay at the crease, Trisha hammered 13 fours and 4 sixes. She added 147 runs for the first wicket with G Kamalini (51 runs from 42 balls) in 13.3 overs and 61 for the second wicket with Sanika Chalke (29 runs from 20 balls).
“I am very happy,” Trisha said about her performance during the mid-innings interview.
India has already qualified for the semifinals of the ongoing tournament after winning all four matches played so far.
The 110-run knock on Tuesday has also helped Trisha take the No. 1 position in the list of leading run scorers in the ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup 2025. She has 230 runs to her name in five matches played so far. Davina Sarah T Perrin of England is in second place with 131 runs in four matches. If Trisha manages to score at least 68 runs in the upcoming matches for the Niki Prasad-led side, then she will break Shweta Sehrawat’s record of scoring the most runs in one edition of the Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup.
During the inaugural edition of the tournament, which was played in 2023 in South Africa, Sehrawat played seven matches and amassed a total of 297 runs.
Trisha, who was only able to score 4 runs for India in the first match against West Indies on January 19, remained unbeaten on 27 in the second Group A match against Malaysia, in which India was asked to chase down the target of 32 runs in 20 overs. In the third match against Sri Lanka, Trisha scored 49 runs, and in the first Super Six match, she hammered 40 runs against Bangladesh and helped India secure a win by 8 wickets.
