Indian captain Rohit Sharma was on fire against England on Sunday (February 9). During the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series played at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, the right-handed batter hammered 119 runs from 90 balls with the help of 12 fours and 7 sixes. The 37-year-old added 136 runs for the first wicket with Shubman Gill (60) and 70 for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer (44). For his superb show with the bat, the Indian captain won the Player of the Match award as well.
Rohit was horribly out of form for quite some time, but with his knock on Sunday, he silenced his critics. Rohit looked comfortable during his stay at the crease in the second ODI and hit sixes for fun. Rohit’s 32nd ODI century for India brought immense joy not just to his fans but also to his teammates.
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav took to Instagram stories to share a video of Rohit celebrating his century and captioned it, “Good things happen to good people. God is great.”
Rohit’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, reposted BCCI’s Instagram post congratulating him on crossing the triple-figure mark on her stories and captioned it, “This one hit straight here.”
Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Aakash Madhwal also took to Instagram to give a special mention to Rohit after his brilliant show with the bat.
Meanwhile, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh posted a tweet in which he praised Rohit’s knock.
“And he’s back with a bang! Cannot keep the hitman quiet for long cracker of an innings with the bat doing all the talking 100 @ImRo45 #INDvsENGODI #IndVSEng,” Yuvraj tweeted.
Rohit crossed the triple-figure mark with a six on the 76th ball of his innings. The first of the seven sixes on Sunday also helped Rohit break Chris Gayle’s record of 331 sixes in ODIs and move to the No. 2 position in the list of batters with the most sixes in the 50-over format of the game.
India’s win over England in the second ODI at Barabati Stadium also helped Rohit break Sourav Ganguly’s record of 97 wins as India captain in international cricket and become the fourth most successful skipper for Men in Blue.
