When Team India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy was announced by BCCI Chief Ajit Agarkar, Karun Nair, who has churned up a storm with his recent performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, was a notable absentee from the contingent.
When quizzed about the non-addition of the 33-year-old in-form batter, who averages an astounding 752 in his seven innings in the premier List A event, Agarkar said that the Vidarbha batter’s showings did make them take notice, however, added that it was difficult at the moment to find a place for him in the squad.
“Averaging 750 plus is special, but we can’t fit everyone in the 15-man squad”, the 47-year-old explained.
“If there is a loss of form (for a player) or injuries, there’s certainly going to be a conversation around him,” Agarkar added.
When Nair was asked about Agarkar’s explanation, the Vidarbha skipper thanked the chief selector for keeping things crystal clear and stated that he shall redirect his focus onto winning the Ranji Trophy.
“It was good to see that a clear statement was given, and I think he made it very clear that, you know, what their thinking was, which makes it easier for the player to understand where he needs to go and what he needs to do. For me at least, it is just about focusing on the next match and focusing on winning the Ranji Trophy at the moment,” Karun Nair said in an interview with RevSportz.
Nair emphasized the patience he will continue to exercise till his time comes again to represent India.
“It’s just 3-4 years of hard work on a consistent basis, going through the same process every single day, waking up every single day with one single thing in your head to go out there and play for your country. So, I think it’s all the 3-4 years of hard work or many more years of hard work that is coming into existence now,” Nair asserted.
