Ahead of Deadline Day for franchises to finalise their retentions for the 2025 auctions in the Indian Premier League, the Gujarat Titans skipper, Shubman Gill has decided to take a pay cut to become the franchise’s second-choice retention.

According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), Gill will be the side’s second-choice retention with the Afghanistan international, Rashid Khan being their first. Sai Sudharshan along with uncapped stars Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan will also be retained by the franchise.

With five retentions made, the side will also have the option of keeping another member with the right-to-match card at the mega-auction set to take place next month.

“Gill has decided to take a pay cut to ensure the core players are retained and build a stronger team,” an IPL source said.

According to the IPL retention rules for the 2025 edition, the first retention will cost INR 18 crores, followed by INR 14 crores for the second, and INR 11 crores for the third-choice retentions respectively. Additionally, uncapped players can also be retained for INR 4 crores per player.

Looking at GT’s retentions, it would mean that they would shell out a total of 51 crores from the increased use amount of 120 crores, meaning they would have 69 crores as their remaining purse amount which they can use at the 2025 mega-auction.

The mega auction is likely to be held overseas in the last week of November. The auction purse has been increased to Rs 120 crore from the Rs 100 crore teams had at their disposal at last year’s auction.

The total salary cap now comprises an auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees. The match fee, set at Rs 7.5 lakh per game, has been introduced ahead of the next season.

GT will look to bolster their squad after a disappointing campaign in Gill’s first season as captain where they finished eighth in the league standings, their first time not qualifying for the playoffs.

With Gill touted as a future leader in the Indian cricket setup, it will be vital that the franchise keep hold of their best talents and ensure that they can get the best players at the best price in the auction to ensure that they are back challenging for the title once again.
