Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has claimed that star England batter Harry Brook is sinking under the pressure of expectations as his team falters in white-ball cricket across the globe.

Jos Buttler and his men started their campaign with a loss to Group B opponents Australia and then a surprise defeat to Afghanistan sent them to the exit door.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin slammed England’s mentality at the ongoing ICC tournament.

“I saw Jos Buttler’s post-match interview (after the Afghanistan game). He was very candid in saying, ‘I do not know what my leadership aspirations are in the future.’ They had a terrible 50-over World Cup in 2023,” Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel.

“There was a statement from Ben Duckett after losing the first ODI in India. He said, ‘We don’t care if we lose 3-0 to India. Because we want to beat India in the final of the Champions Trophy,” Ashwin said.

“There is no consistent template in your batting. You were marketing and branding Harry Brook as the next generation’s sensation. But Harry Brook’s game is also sinking. He is now under immense pressure to produce match-winning knocks,” Ashwin added.

Meanwhile, Buttler on Friday said that he will step down as England white-ball skipper after their last Champions Trophy group game against South Africa on Saturday, March 1.

England crashed out of the eight-team Champions Trophy after losing to Afghanistan on Wednesday. They will play against South Africa in their last Group B game in Karachi.

After taking over as white-ball skipper in June 2022 after the retirement of Eoin Morgan, Buttler led England to glory in that year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

However, the England skipper’s tenure saw two disappointing title defences as well, and the 2023 50-over World Cup in India, where England couldn’t make the semis after losing to Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

In the T20 World Cup, England lost to the eventual winners, India, in the semifinal in the Caribbean in 2024.

Buttler has led England in 44 ODIs, securing 18 victories and 25 defeats and recording one no result. He, however, said that there is no retirement in the pipeline for him as he wants to “get back to really enjoying” his cricket.
