Pace all-rounder Harshit Rana became the first Indian to pick three wickets on all three of his Test, ODI and T20I debuts on Thursday in the first 2025 ODI against England in Nagpur. His spell of 3/53, though expensive for seven overs, helped India bowl England out for 248, before chasing it down with four wickets to spare.

Rana had a tough start to the day as he took the new ball and England’s openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett smashed 37 runs in his first three overs, with 26 coming in the final one. However, he came back strongly, getting Duckett out off a short ball and Harry Brook for a duck soon after. He rounded off his spell with Liam Livingstone’s wicket in his seventh over, completing the treble of three wickets on all format debuts.

He took four wickets on his Test debut in Perth in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with a spell of 3/48 in the first innings. Last week he made his T20I debut in Pune against England as a (slightly controversial) concussion substitute for Shivam Dube and took 3/33.

Only four other players in the world have picked at least three wickets in each of their three debuts. These are England’s Jon Lewis (2005-06), Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis (2008), West Indies’ Devendra Bishoo (2011) and Australia’s Pat Cummins (2011).

“It was my dream,” Harshit said after the first innings in an interview with the broadcasters. “I prepared myself for this and put in the hard yards. I didn’t hit the right lengths initially but got the rewards once I corrected them. They were looking to make some room (the batters), that’s the reason I kept bowling on the stumps. It’s a slightly two-paced pitch. Some of them are coming on nicely, some are stopping a bit. We bounced back in style. It’s a good total and we can chase this down.”

Interestingly, all three of Harshit’s history-making spells have come in winning causes.

In Nagpur, Ravindra Jadeja also took three wickets and Jos Buttler’s 52 was the highest score for England in the first innings. 248 proved to be too big a total for England as Shubman Gill’s 87 and Shreyas Iyer’s 59 (36) helped India chase the total down in just 38.4 overs.
