Virat Kohli’s frustratingly inconsistent run of form has continued to be a thorn in the Indian side. Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar has witnessed the same and recognized it as cause for worry, stating that Kohli needs to play the waiting game.

Kohli came into the crease, needing to make a stand with KL Rahul to steer India clear of danger. But, in what has become typical fashion, Kohli went chasing after a Hazlewood delivery, wide outside the off stump, to end nicking the same behind into the hands of Alex Carey, leaving India at a dismal 22-3 — which became 44/4 — in the chase of 445.

Some fans and followers called out Kohli for his ‘blatant arrogance’, highlighting the batter’s seeming inability to learn from his mistakes and his weaknesses, as Kohli continues to be exploited for his very blatant flaw in innings galore.

Gavaskar echoed the same sentiments as the fans, baffled at how the talisman batter Kohli was suffering to let balls be and inflict this unfavourable outcome upon himself.

“In the earlier three dismissals, there was nothing wrong. (But) this one, he brought this upon himself because he could’ve left that ball well alone,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“Even earlier, there was a delivery of Mitchell Starc which was angled across, and he reached for it, so, that is worrying. He has now got out in similar manner, not in this series, but against the Australians. He chased the deliveries outside off-stump, and he was caught behind.”

Gavaskar called for Kohli to be patient with his game, and play through the rough periods with calm, rather than chase everything thrown his way.

“The fact that he is leaning on to the front foot, Haydos thinks he should be coming there but for me, I think you got to give yourself a little bit of time, not play as low as you do in India,” said Gavaskar.

By the end of Day 3, India were left at 51/4 after the Australians were only able to bowl 17 overs so far, with players leaving the field seven times due to downpours.
