Teenager Sam Konstas garnered attention with his fearless batting and infectious energy on the field. During the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne, the 19-year-old made an instant impact by smashing 60 off 65 balls in a match-winning effort, as Australia triumphed by 184 runs over India on Monday.
Konstas’ audacious scoops and laps off Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah had fans buzzing, earning the young batter widespread recognition and providing his team with a crucial advantage in the fourth Test. It wasn’t just his batting that stole the show, but his lively personality and bold approach also caught the eye of Steve Smith.
“He’s mad,” Smith told 7Cricket, laughing in admiration as he reflected on Konstas’ fearless approach. “I think he really enjoyed himself under the lid there.”
Smith has seen a bit of his younger self in Konstas, who has quickly earned a reputation for his exuberance and determination. But it wasn’t just his batting that stood out—Konstas also made his mark in the field with constant chatter and cheeky comments directed at the Indian batters.
“He was chirping,” Smith recalled. “I think at one point (Yashasvi) Jaiswal was actually trying to hit the ball at him to shut him up a bit. But look, he’s brought great energy to the team.”
Konstas wasn’t afraid to add a bit of spice to his debut, too. After Bumrah was dismissed in India’s second innings, caught at slip by Smith off pacer Scott Boland, Konstas gave the Indian fast bowler a cheeky send-off, further showcasing his confident approach.
Smith, impressed by the teenager’s overall impact, added, “He’s brought a real confidence, and it’s nice to see him start so well in his first Test match. I think he’s got a bright future ahead of him.”
