Rohit Sharma has struggled with form in red-ball cricket recently having managed 152 runs in his last 13 innings.
Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar has made a massive prediction about Rohit Sharma’s future in the longest format of the game. The legendary batter believes that Rohit might step down from red-ball captaincy if his poor form persists.
Gavaskar also added that the current Indian Test skipper may not wait for the selection committee to take any decision on his role.
“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” Gavaskar told ABC Sports.
Rohit has struggled with form in red-ball cricket recently. The Indian skipper has only managed 152 runs in the last 13 innings, averaging 11.83. He failed to make an impact in the India-New Zealand series, which ended in a 0-3 whitewash for the home side.
His disappointing run has extended into the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy leading to criticism.
Highlighting his recent batting displays, Gavaskar claimed that Rohit may consider stepping down from the skipper role as he cares deeply for the Indian cricket.
“He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket. So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down,” Gavaskar concluded.
Rohit was absent from India’s squad in the opening Test of the tour and in his absence, Jasprit Bumrah led the side to a dominant 295-run win in Perth.
Rohit was back at the helm for the second Test in Adelaide which India lost and his lean run continued.
The third Test of the also saw Rohit not being able to make significant contribution with the bat. India fought to avoid the follow-on thanks to half-centuries from KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadej followed by vital contributions from Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah.
The contest ended in a draw with rain playing the spoilsport.
