Karun Nair has said he was ‘heartbroken and disappointed’ when he made his now-famous ‘Dear Cricket’ post three years ago.
Karun Nair has revealed that he was heartbroken and disappointed after being left out of all Karnataka state teams in late 2022 which led to his now-viral post on X (formerly Twitter), which read, ‘Dear cricket, give me one more chance’.
The right-handed batter, now playing for Vidarbha, has reportedly returned back to international reckoning this month. He has recorded scores of 112*, 44*, 163*, 111*, 112 and 122 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, becoming only the fourth batter in the world to smash four List-A centuries on the trot.
“I think it was an emotional moment,” Nair told Hindustan Times about the Karnataka snub. “It was just probably in the heat of the moment kind of post. I am usually pretty calm and composed most of the time. I keep my emotions together. But you know that moment was pretty, you know what I can say, heartbreaking and disappointing for me at that point. Having played for so many years for Karnataka, not to find a spot in any of the teams. So yeah, it was a very heartbreaking moment.”
Nair added that he has since been trying to put that episode aside and using it as a fuel for making every day count.
How Karun Nair Decided To Shift To Vidarbha
Nair also spoke about how his career landed in Vidarbha. He said it started with the feeling of not being ‘wanted’ in Karnataka after representing them for over a decade, starting from age-group cricket.
“So basically, I went to play this DY Patil tournament in Mumbai, which I am really thankful for, for Mansoor Ali Khan sir and Bharat Chipli. I spoke to them about giving me an opportunity to play for Canara Bank. So I went there just because I was sitting at home for 3-4 months. I just wanted to play some cricket. I requested that they let me join their team as a guest player, and then during the tournament, I met Abey Kuruvilla over there, who I had known from the under-19 days when he was a selector,” said Nair.
“And I went straight up to him and asked him, ‘Sir, can you please find me a team?’. I want to play First-Class cricket. That’s how Vidarbha came about,” he added.
Although India has the 2025 Champions Trophy to focus on for now, a report in The Indian Express has claimed that the selectors are now looking at Nair again for the format, thanks to his proficiency against spin.
