A fan’s quest for a Sam Konstas selfie went hilariously wrong as a parking mishap left cars colliding.
Sam Konstas has emerged as the new star of Australian cricket. After his impressive Test debut in the Border Gavaskar Trophy against India, the 19-year-old is currently plying his trade in the Big Bash League, representing Sydney Thunders. Amid his participation in the T20 competition, a hilarious video featuring Konstas has gone viral on social media. In the CCTV footage shared by Sydney Thunders on Instagram, Konstas was captured heading to the Cricket NSW headquarters at Sydney Olympic Park with his kitbag in hand.
At the parking lot, a fan spotted the young opener and tried to click a selfie with him which led to a bizarre accident. In a desperate attempt, the man hurriedly parked his white Land Cruiser Prado and jumped out of the car to follow Konstas.
While rushing behind the cricketer, the fan suddenly realised he had forgotten to pull the handbrake. His car started rolling forward and ended up crashing into another four-wheeler parked there. The panicked driver tried his best to stop the vehicle but could not prevent the collision.
Sydney Thunders titled the video “The Konstas Effect”. “We obtained approval from all parties involved to share this footage. No one was injured,” the franchise wrote in the caption of the Instagram post.
The fan, identified as Sirajuddin Khan, later revealed his side of the story during an interaction with the Sydney Morning Herald. According to him, the incident took place on January 15 when his 12-year-old Shahzad was training at Cricket Central. “At that moment, it all went wrong. I just bought that car last month,” he told the outlet.
Sirajuddin was there to meet his son when he found Konstas entering the venue for a practice session. “As you can see, I parked in the disabled spot because in my head I thought that I was going there only for one second. As soon as I’m reversing back in, I see this guy rocking up. It was Konstas,” he recalled.
“I think to myself, I’ll get ahead of Konstas, run to my son, get him from training, then I’ll take a picture for him. I jumped out of the car and started running. I actually wasn’t going to say hello to Konstas. I was going to grab my son and ask Konstas if he could have a picture. All of a sudden my car is going beep, beep, beep,” Sirajuddin explained further.
His son later managed to snap a picture with Konstas, though he had no idea about the parking incident. When Konstas got to learn about the video, he said, “I didn’t even know he was chasing me. It wasn’t funny, but hopefully he’s all good. But I saw the clip and, yeah, it was a bit viral,” as per The Roar.
After playing the upcoming BBL match against Sydney Sixers, Konstas will once again shift his focus to Test cricket. He will jet off to the UAE for a training camp before touring Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series later this month.
