Fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground cringed at a horrific scene during a Big Bash League (BBL) fixture between the Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers as James Vince smashed a drive straight at a seagull sitting on the ground on Thursday.

A swarm of seagulls was on the field during the Sixers’ run chase. Unfortunately, one of those failed to avoid James Vince’s strike and got hit.

Facing Joel Paris, Vince had played a shot down the ground and it landed straight on the unlucky bird. A security guard entered the field to take the seagull away.

“Oh no, oh no. We’ve been talking about it all night. Gilly [Adam Gilchrist] you said something would happen,” Mark Howard said on commentary for Fox Cricket.

A similar incident happened during another Big Bash League match between the Stars and Perth Scorchers at the MCG in 2015. In the 17th over of the Perth Scorchers’ innings, a seagull had failed to escape a strong pull shot hit by Adam Voges.

Coming back to the latest Big Bash League game, Vince scored a brilliant half-century but failed to guide his side Sydney Sixers to a win against the Stars. Chasing a target of 157, the Sixers fell short by 16 runs.

Glenn Maxwell’s terrific, unbeaten knock of 58 helped the Stars reach a defendable total of 156. Maxwell’s 32-ball knock comprised five boundaries and three sixes.

“Credit to Maxi. Look, he might be disappointed about the Test squad. There’s arguments for him to be in that but the true professional he is, he rocked up, showed the crowd, showed us what he can do,” the Stars skipper Marcus Stoinis said after the game, as per Daily Mail.

Beau Webster, who recently made his international debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, missed out on his half-century by two runs against the Sixers. Sean Abbott picked up three wickets for the Stars.

Following the win, the Stars now find themselves placed at the seventh spot in the Big Bash League standings with six points from eight games. Meanwhile, second-placed Sixers are tied at nine points along with table-toppers Sydney Thunder.
