Afghanistan faced Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match on Friday, February 28, in Lahore, but the match played at Gaddafi Stadium got washed out due to rain, after which both teams had to settle with one point each. As a result of the draw, Australia has booked its place in the semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2025 with four points from three matches in Group B, whereas Afghanistan has finished their group stage campaign with 3 points. Despite winning one, losing one, and one draw, Afghanistan is still alive in the race to qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2025. But their fate is no longer in their own hands.
Afghanistan will qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2025 only if South Africa lose its last Group B match against England in Karachi on Saturday, March 1, by at least 207 runs if they bat second or England chase down the target set by South Africa in 11.1 overs (assuming a first innings total of 300 in both cases).
For Afghanistan to qualfiy for semifinal
England will have to beat South Africa by at least 207 runs if they bat first. If they bat second, they will have to chase down the target within 11.1 overs (assuming a first innings total of 300 in both cases).
In such a scenario, both South Africa and Afghanistan will finish with 3 points each from 3 matches, and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s men will progress due to better net run rate.
If the match between England and South Africa in Karachi on Saturday gets washed out, then South Africa will qualify for the semifinal with four points from three matches, along with Australia, and Afghanistan will get knocked out, and if South Africa beat England, then they will finish as table toppers and will face the loser of Sunday’s match between India and New Zealand in the semifinal match.
