India beat Pakistan by 6 wickets in the Champions Trophy 2025 match played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, February 23. India rode on batting superstar Virat Kohli’s first century in the Champions Trophy to chase down the target of 242 runs in 42.3 overs for the loss of four wickets. The defeat against India in Dubai is Pakistan’s second straight loss in the tournament, and with 0 points from two matches played so far, the Mohammad Rizwan-led side sits at the last position in the Group A points table.

Despite losing both the matches played so far in the eight-team tournament, the Pakistani team is alive in the race to qualify for the semifinal. Mohammad Rizwan’s men will finish in the top two of Group A points table and book a place in the semifinal if Bangladesh beat New Zealand in the sixth match of the Champions Trophy 2025 on Monday in Rawalpindi. Pakistan beat Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on Thursday (February 27) and India beat New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday (March 2). In such a scenario, India will finish as table toppers with 6 points from three matches, and three teams—Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand—will finish with 2 points each from three matches in Group A.

In such a scenario, the team with better net run rate will finish in the 2nd place and Pakistan will have a chance to progress.

But if New Zealand beat Bangladesh on Monday, then Pakistan and Bangladesh both will get knocked out of the Champions Trophy 2025. If the Group A match between New Zealand and Bangladesh ends in a draw, then also Pakistan’s Champions Trophy title defence will come to an end.

In the history of the Champions Trophy, only once has a team managed to successfully defend its title. The feat was achieved by Ricky Ponting’s Australian team, which won the title in 2006 and then in 2009.
