The match between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the UP Warriorz in the 2025 edition of the Women’s Premier League saw a historic first super-over on Monday.

Sophie Ecclestone’s late charge saw the Warriorz get their chase back on track as the game went down to the wire. With one wicket remaining and one run needed for the final delivery, the English international was unable to complete the run in the last ball as Richa Ghosh charged in to hit the stumps right on time.

The Warriorz came into bat with Chinelle Henry and Grace Harris coming in as their first two batters. Henry looked to hammer the first delivery, slicing it to the deep backward point but a fine dive by the Bengaluru skipper, Smriti Mandhana helped save some valuable runs.

Henry struggled to clear the ropes, as she was eventually dismissed after scoring four runs. She edged one straight to the keeper as the Warriorz sent in Ecclestone out to the middle.

Harris was watchful in the few deliveries she faced off Garth, leaving the delivery well wide on the off-side to get an extra run and another delivery. But the Warriorz were not able to capitalise as they settled for eight runs in the over losing just one wicket.

RCB opted to send out Mandhana and Ghosh as their first two batters. As for the Warriorz’ bowling, Ecclestone was handed the responsibility, tasked to defend 9 runs in the over.

The spinner started off well with a quicker delivery on a length which Ghosh punched to the fielder by the covers for a dot. But there was a moment of concern for the home side as the batter hammered one straight onto the stumps. But there was no contact with the bowler and RCB managed to steal the single.

The Bengaluru crowd were stunned in the very next ball as Ecclestone’s tossed-up delivery ended up crashing onto the pad and the umpire raised the finger. The DRS review saw the home crowd cheer away with the delivery pitching outside the leg stump.

Neither Mandhana nor Ghosh was able to capitalise on the last few deliveries as the Bengaluru crowd remained in shock as the Warriorz went on to take the victory.
