Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was horribly out of form in the three-match Test series at home against New Zealand and Border-Gavaskar Trophy away against Australia, which raised a lot of question marks over his future in international cricket. But despite his lean patch, the 37-year-old right-handed batter was retained by selectors in the ODI team for the three-match home series against England in February 2025, and he repaid the faith by scoring a century in the second match played at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. Rohit opened for India in the 305-run chase on February 9, and with the help of 12 fours and 7 sixes, scored 119 runs from 90 balls. By scoring big runs in the second match, which also helped India seal the series, Rohit silenced his critics and also gave a warning to opposition teams ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, which begins on Wednesday, February 19, in Karachi.
Rohit’s return to form was good news for Indian cricket team fans and followers, who expect the right-handed batter from Mumbai to maintain his good form in the Champions Trophy as well and score big runs for Men in Blue. Ahead of India’s first match in the eight-team tournament, which will be played from February 19 to March 9 across three venues in Pakistan and one in Dubai, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has made a big prediction about Rohit’s performance in upcoming matches.
According to the member of India’s 2013 Champions Trophy winning team squad, Rohit will go well in the Champions Trophy, and his innings will be very crucial for the Indian team.
“I personally think with the form that he showed in that second game in Cuttack, he will go well for India. And he’s very crucial. Look, the tempo at which he bats actually makes it easier for a lot of the other guys to come through. So, Rohit Sharma’s innings every time he walks out to bat is going to be really, really important for Team India,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz’s HeyCB with DK show.
Rohit, who made his ODI debut for India on June 23, 2007, during a match played against Ireland in Belfast, has scored 481 runs in 10 Champions Trophy games. In the semifinal match of the 2017 edition, Rohit scored a century against Bangladesh to book the Virat Kohli-led side’s place in the final.
