Punjab Kings pacer Lockie Ferguson is likely to be ruled out of the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. Speaking on the eve of PBKS’ clash against Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday, the team’s fast bowling coach James Hopes said that the New Zealand quick had ‘done a real decent injury’ and the chances of him coming back before the end of the season had ‘a very low percentage’.
The right-arm pacer seemed to pick up the injury during the second innings of PBKS’ match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Uppal on Saturday. He stopped after just the second ball of his spell and was seen holding the side of his left leg near the hamstring area. He hobbled off the field with the team physio and did not return to bowl again, as SRH chased down a record 246-run total to win by eight wickets.
“Ferguson is out indefinitely, and us getting him back by the end of the tournament is a very low percentage. I think he’s done a real decent injury to himself,” Hopes said in the pre-match press conference in Chandigarh.
Ferguson was having a pretty decent time in the season, picking five wickets in four matches at an average of 20.80 with an economy rate of 9.17.
Speaking further, Hopes blamed the SRH defeat on PBKS’ fielding mistakes saying, “That (last game) was a bit disappointing for us. We knew going into it that it was going to be an extremely high-scoring game. We knew that it was a high-scoring wicket. We got a great score on the board, but then, unfortunately, our inability to take catches that night made the match disappear on us.”
The team is placed sixth in the points table with three wins in five matches, only behind KKR who have three wins in six matches and are fifth.
“We’re sitting at 3-2, which is a good spot in the competition, and we’ve got a big week coming up against the same two opponents, KKR and RCB. That’s just the way the schedule has worked out for us. We’ve got them for the next four games. So if we can have a good week, we’re going to be well-placed going into the second half of the tournament,” Hopes added.
