Ravi Bishnoi was quite economical in the first two T20Is of the ongoing series between India and England. In the eight overs Bishnoi bowled during the opening two games, he conceded just 49 runs in them but was wicketless. His wait for a first wicket in the series ended in Rajkot during the third T20I when he bowled Harry Brook but it came at a cost – runs.

The 24-year-old legspinner proved quite expensive and leaked 46 runs in his four overs with England batter Liam Livingstone scoring 19 runs in one of his overs.

However, his teammate Varun Chakaravarthy, also a legspinner, had a memorable outing, finishing with a five-wicket haul while giving away 24 runs in his four-over spell. The vastly experienced Adil Rashid of England also bowled miserly later in the evening with his four overs costing his team just 15 runs.

So what went wrong with Bishnoi?

Chakaravarthy defended his young teammate and cited his own expensive spell in the 2nd T20I when he was taken for 38 runs.

“Bishnoi is a top-class bowler,” Chakaravarthy said. “Last match I went for 38 runs. He bowled around 26 runs (27). So, it’s just this match or that match anyone can get hit.”

“So, no one can be judged with just one match and he, I am sure I can write and give you he will make a great comeback in the next match,” he added.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav, for the third time in the series, won the toss and opted to bowl first. Thanks to Chakaravarthy’s terrific show with the ball, England were kept to 171/9 in 20 overs.

However, Indian batters had an off day with the pitch slowing down and England limiting their hosts to 145/9 to win by 26 runs. With that, the Jos Buttler-led side has managed to keep the series alive with two matches remaining.

The fourth T20I will be held in Pune on Friday.
