The former Indian cricketer reacted to reports which suggested that Rohit Sharma has been dropped for the upcoming Test against Australia in Sydney.

He credited the management for taking a bold move ahead of the all-important clash against the Aussies where a lot remains at stake. Both teams will be going for the win or retain to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy respectively.

“Very good decision taken by management,” Madan Lal in an interaction with CNN-News18 commented on Rohit being rested.

The 1983 World Cup winner reckons that the skipper was also involved in the decision along with the team management.

“I think the captain was part of this decision,” he added.

Rohit’s form with the bat has been a massive concern since the Test series against New Zealand at home. The lack of runs along with the team’s disappointing run of performances have hampered India’s chances of making it to a third consecutive final in the World Test Championship.

Madan Lal reckons that being rested could be the right call for the Indian captain to find his mojo and get back to his best form with the bat and as a captain.

“Sometimes if you are not in form…it is better to be rested,” he commented.

Australia currently have the series lead 2-1 and are firm favourites to win the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground which begins on Thursday. But India’s only win in the series came in the opening Test where Jasprit Bumrah led the side in Rohit’s absence and had a dominating performance in all aspects.

The Indian team would hope that going back to that setup can help them level the series and hopefully retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy yet again. The Aussies on the other hand will not be keen to settle for anything but a win, considering that it has been a decade since they last won this title.

Should India go all the way to level the series, they would have to step up, particularly in the batting front where they have to contribute much more than before. When it comes to the bowling department, the responsibility has to be shared between the bowlers and not solely rely on Jasprit Bumrah to take the team all the way.
