Renuka Singh Thakur was on fire for India on Sunday, December 22. The Himachal Pradesh-based fast bowler accounted for the dismissal of five West Indies batters for 29 runs in her quota of 10 overs during the first ODI match of the ongoing three-match series played at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. Thanks to her super show with the ball, India managed to dismiss the Women in Maroon for 103 runs in 26.2 overs in reply to the target of 315 runs.

Renuka was delighted after registering her first-ever fifer in the ODI format. During the post-match interview, the right-arm pacer expressed gratitude to her teammates for “backing” her.

“Feeling very good. First five-wicket haul in ODIs, and I am happy because everyone backed me so much to get that five-wicket haul. I have worked a lot on my fitness and hence could bowl eight overs on the trot,” Renuka said.

The 28-year-old opened her wicket account on Sunday by dismissing West Indies captain Hayley Matthews for a five-ball duck and then clean bowled all-rounder Deandra Dottin, who scored 8 runs from 11 balls. According to Renuka, the pitch at the Kotambi Stadium helped her get the swing in the first few overs.

“The wicket was helping us, but the weather got colder. I wanted to hit the right areas, and I got assistance from the pitch as well,” the Indian speedster added.

While Renuka was named the Player of the Match, Smriti Mandhana was also credited for the dominant win. The Indian opener struck 91 runs off 102 balls, hitting 13 boundaries. Debutant Pratika Rawal supported her pretty well, adding 40 runs to the score.

Harleen Deol also enjoyed a good outing and scored a quickfire 34 while Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh chipped in with some crucial cameos. For West Indies, Zaida James took five wickets, and Afy Fletcher was the top scorer with 24 runs. Among the other Indian bowlers, Priya Mishra picked up two scalps.

West Indies will aim for a comeback in the second ODI, to be played in Vadodara on December 24.
