Congress spokesperson Dr Shama Mohamed criticised Indian captain Rohit Sharma, calling him “overweight” and “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had”. Since then, following intense backlash, the politician clarified that her views were personal. But, all of the same never mattered to Rohit, who led his team to the final of the Champions Trophy.
When asked about the recent talk surrounding the ODI skipper’s fitness, India’s T20I captain and MI teammate Suryakumar Yadav reiterated that there was no doubting Rohit’s ability and that he looks up to him as the creme de la creme.
“If you see him as a captain, in the last 4 years, he has taken the team to the finals of 4 ICC trophies. So it is a big thing, and if a person is playing cricket for 15-20 years, it is a big thing, and I have seen him closely; he works very hard,” Suryakumar stated in a talk with ANI.
“In my opinion, he is at the top, and I wish him all the best for the finals.”
India punched their ticket to the final of the Champions Trophy with a gritty showing against perennial rivals Australia, in a 4-wicket victory that saw the likes of talisman Virat Kohli lead from the front, coupled with an all-round display from the rest of the team.
SKY stated that he feels confident about India’s chances in the final against New Zealand, slated to take place on March 9.
“I have already said that we are playing good cricket. If we play the same brand of cricket, then the final is just another game,” Suryakumar Yadav added.
India faced New Zealand in the last Group A match in Dubai on Sunday (March 2) and secured a win by 44 runs.
The Men in Blue will be looking to repeat the same form of dominance this upcoming Sunday, in what would be a rematch of the 2000 Champions Trophy final, and bring home the silverware.
