India vs Australia: In his first ever Test innings against Australia, star Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to open his account. The 22-year-old left-handed batter was sent back to the pavilion for an eight-ball duck by star Aussie pacer Mitchell Starc on Friday (November 22). Jaiswal, who is India’s highest-ranked Test batter, was caught in the gully by Nathan McSweeney.
McSweeney is making his Test debut for the Baggy Greens at the Optus Stadium, and he settled his nerves by completing a superb catch.
The video of McSweeney taking Jaiswal’s catch on the second ball of the third over is now going viral on the internet.
It was Jaiswal’s second duck in Test cricket. He failed to open his account in the first innings of the second Test between India and South Africa as well, which was played at Newlands in Cape Town on January 3, 2024.
Jaiswal was the first Indian batter to return back to the pavilion. At the time of his dismissal, India had only scored 5 runs in 2.1 overs. Devdutt Padikkal replaced Shubman Gill in India’s playing XI as No. 3 batter, but the left-handed batter from Karnataka also failed to open his account and was caught behind by Alex Carey for a 23-ball duck.
Bumrah wins toss
Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is leading India in the first Test in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who is yet to arrive in Australia. Bumrah won the toss and opted to bat first. India has included two uncapped players in the playing XI for the series opener. Pacer Harshit Rana was preferred over the likes of Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna, who have played five and two Tests, respectively, whereas Nitish Kumar Reddy is the pace-bowling all-rounder.
Reddy has played three T20Is for India against Bangladesh last month, but it’s the first time Rana is included in India’s playing XI in any format of the game.
Washington Sundar is the lone spinner in India’s XI. He was picked ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Dhruv Jurel is playing as a pure batter after he impressed with his batting performance for India A in the second unofficial Test played against Australia A at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
