India vs England 1st T20I, Eden Gardens: India will kick off their five-match T20I series against England on Wednesday (January 22). The Men in Blue head into the bilateral tour as the reigning T20 World Cup champions. Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the side having last year guided India to a dominant 3-1 victory in South Africa. After spending over a year away from international cricket, pacer Mohammad Shami will be seen in action as well. The India pacer last featured in an international fixture during the ODI World Cup in 2023.

India last faced England in the short format during the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 when an all-round show saw Rohit Sharma’s men register a big win over England. India batted first in that game and set a target of 171/7. Rohit scored a 39-ball 57 while smashing six fours and two sixes. Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with 47 runs. Axar combined with Kuldeep Yadav for six wickets as England were kept to 103.

Kolkata Weather Forecast

The skies are expected to remain generally clear in Kolkata during India’s opening T20I against England on January 22. The temperatures will hover between 28 degrees Celsius during the day and to 16 degrees Celsius at night. The chances of precipitation remain low at seven per cent. The humidity levels should not exceed 77 per cent.

The pitch at the Eden Gardens has a reputation for being batting friendly. It offers good bounce and usually gets slower as the game progresses bringing spinners into the play. The record for the highest T20I total at this venue belongs to Pakistan when they scored 201/5 against Bangladesh during the 2016 world cup. India’s highest total here is 186/5.

India have played seven T20Is at this venue and won six of them. Their only defeat came against England in 2011.
