Debutant top-order batter Yashasvi Jaiswal took a stunning running catch in the first 2025 ODI between India and England in Nagpur to send back opener Ben Duckett on Thursday.
It happened in England’s first innings, on the third ball of the 10th over. Harshit Rana, also on debut, bowled it short and around the off-stump and Duckett took on the pull shot. He didn’t get on the top of the bounce and the ball flew off the top edge over the square leg region outside the circle.
Jaiswal was played at mid-wicket and sprinted all the way with eyes on the ball before launching the perfect dive forward to grab it. He immediately went off a celebratory airplane run. Watch the video here from (0:13):
Jaiswal has slowly emerged as one of the safest fielders in the Indian team. Even in Test cricket, skipper Rohit Sharma has tended to trust him for the most important positions on the field.
In the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, apart from an off day where he dropped a couple of catches in a short period of time, he was pretty good and a regular member of the slip-cordon.
Coming back to the match, Duckett’s wicket for 32 (29) reduced England to 77/2. Only four balls ago, the other opener, Phil Salt, had got run out thanks to a brilliant throw from the deep from Shreyas Iyer.
The score soon became 111/4 as Rana picked up the wicket of Harry Brook before Ravindra Jadeja got Joe Root trapped in front.
Jaiswal would want to similarly grab his chance with the bat, too. He wasn’t in line to make his debut here and got into the team because Virat Kohli picked up a knee injury last night, according to skipper Rohit Sharma at the toss.
“Jaiswal and Harshit are making their debuts; unfortunately, Virat isn’t playing, he had a knee problem last night,” Rohit had said.
Now, it needs to be seen whether Jaiswal takes Kohli’s number three spot in the team or retains his usual Test opening position with vice-captain Shubman Gill shifting to number three.
