Familiar faces are set to reappear as England batter Tom Banton is set to be included in England’s squad for the third ODI on Wednesday.
Banton, who last played for England in an ODI in August 2020, has been called up as cover for the third ODI and final against India in Ahmedabad, in place of an injured Jacob Bethell.
England made the call to bring in the batter after all-rounder Bethell sustained a left hamstring injury in the first ODI in Nagpur.
Bethell, who scored a half-century and took a wicket in England’s four-wicket defeat in the first ODI at Nagpur, had sustained a left hamstring injury.
“The injury will be assessed further when the team arrives in Ahmedabad on Monday (for the third ODI on Wednesday),” said an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) release on Sunday.
England made three changes to the side for the second ODI in Cuttack on Sunday, bringing in Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton in the playing XI in place of the injured Bethell, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer.
Having caught the eye as a teenager in domestic cricket, Banton’s first foray into internationals was underwhelming, with three fifties across his 20 innings.
The 26-year-old Banton, a wicketkeeper-batter has played six ODIs, scoring 134 runs with a highest of 58. He has also played 14 T20s, most recently in 2022.
Banton though has been in outstanding form as of late, topping the scoring charts in the ongoing ILT20 competition in UAE, amassing 493 runs from 11 innings at an average of 54.77, including two centuries for MI Emirates.
Banton is set to join the England side on Monday, as India are 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series currently.
