Team India closed out Day 1 of the third and final Test against New Zealand at 86 for the loss of 4 wickets as the hosts trial the Kiwis by 149 runs in the first innings after the visitors totalled 235 in their first innings at the fabled Wankhede Stadium on Friday.

New Zealand put up their score thanks to fifties from Will Young and Daryll Mitchell, while the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar scalped nine wickets between them with Akash Deep picking up the other.

The Kiwis won the toss and opted to bat first as skipper Tom Latham opened the innings with Devon Conway.

The hosts, playing only for pride, struck early through Akash Deep as the seamer dismissed Conway for 4 runs as he trapped the southpaw plumb in front of the wickets.

Latahm added 28 runs to the scoreboard before being castled by Washington Sundar. The Indian spinner doubled his tally with the scalp of Rachin Ravindra for just 5 runs as he struck timber again.

Will Young and Darryl Mitchell notched up an 82-run stand for the fourth wicket before the former was scalped by Ravindra Jadeja, but only after he had added 71 runs off his willow.

Tom Blundell was scalped for a duck by Jadeja in the third delivery he faced as the spinner hit the batter’s wickets with a ripper of a delivery. Jadeja’s day continued to brighten up as he sent Glenn Phillips back to the hut for 17 runs with another dismissal.

The southpaw racked up his fourth wicket of the day as he caught Ish Sodhi in front of the wicket, before completing his fifer with the removal of Matt Hendry for a duck.

Mitchell, who added 82 runs for the Kiwis’ cause, fell to Sundar, before the Tamil Nadu spinner scalped Ajaz Patel for 7 runs to bundle New Zealand out for 235 runs.

India began their first innings with skipper Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal before Henry dismissed captain Rohit for a run-a-ball 18.

Shubman Gill, who came on to replace his fallen captain, accompanied Jasiwal for a 53-run stand before Patel broke through the defences of southpaw Jaiswal with a brilliant delivery.

The left-arm spinner also struck with the immediate next delivery to dismiss nightwatchman Mohammad Siraj for a golden duck despite his review.

Virat Kohli, who got off the mark with a splendid boundary off Ravindra, had to walk back to the hut early as Henry produced a bit of gun-fielding to catch his short of the crease.

India concluded the opening day of the final Test at 86/4 with Gill and Rishabh Pant unbeaten at the crease at 31 and 1 respectively, as India trailed the Kiwis by 149 runs.
