India have lost four of their last five Tests which has seen them suffer multiple batting collapses especially when the conditions are challenging.
Aakash Chopra has expressed his disappointment at India’s batting performance in the last few Tests. Starting from the home series against New Zealand, India have endured multiple batting collapses and it has seen them lose four of their last five Tests.
The problem was evident in the recently concluded pink-ball Test against Australia as well. India managed to bat only 81 overs across the two innings and ended up losing the match in Adelaide by 10 wickets.
Chopra felt the batters are failing to step up in challenging conditions.
“We are not able to bat in the first innings. In challenging conditions, we have suffered collapses one after another. In the last 5 Tests, India scored runs properly only twice. So, a total of 8 batting failures. Out of them, 5 are first innings failures. Out batting gets exposed in the first innings,” the former Indian opener said.
Chopra feels Indian batters must “accept the problem” first to get better.
“If you are not understanding the problem, what are you going to improve? There is a problem with our batting. In the two times we have scored runs, the conditions were good for batting then,” he said.
After India succumbed to a big defeat in Adelaide, captain Rohit Sharma accepted the batting failure.
“When you come to Australia, I feel the best chance of winning a Test match is by putting runs on the board. And of course, when we won the toss, we elected to bat. But we knew there would be challenges,” he said.
After the first two Tests, the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy is level at one-all.
The third contest is slated to start from December 14 at The Gabba in Brisbane.
