2024 proved to be a bittersweet year for the Indian Cricket Team. The Men in Blue started off on a historic note, winning the T20 World Cup, and also ended the year on yet another historic note, one that India would probably have not wished to do so.

In the world of Test cricket, India have had a mixed bag of a year. After starting off with a win against South Africa to tie the series and a walloping of the Englishmen in a 4-1 beatdown, it seemed as if the Indians were well on track to make the WTC final.

But, things would take a turn for the worse in the second half of the year – a historically horrible turn. Despite a 2-0 win over Bangladesh, India would suffer an embarassing 0-3 series loss to New Zealand, their first-ever series win in India that too in a whitewash.

With the weight of expectation of a billion Indians, and the fate of their WTC Final qualification on the line, India would once again fail in embarrassing fashion down under, losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to the Australians for the first time in 10 years.

With their defeats to both New Zealand and Australia, India broke a dated record, marking 2024 as the first time in 46 years to lose three matches each in consecutive Test series.

The last time this happened was back in 1977-1978, when India hosted England at home in 1976-77, losing 3-1 at home, before a long break and subsequently travelling to Australia in 1977-78, going on to lose dramatically 3-2 to an Aussie team weakened by Kerry Packer World Series of Cricket absentees.

India’s abhorrent run of form in Test criket over the past year has lead to dire consequences for the Indian team, With their third and final loss of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, India relinquished the title to the hosts, and to make things worse, they handed over the WTC final spot to Australia with no real contest.

India’s next Test assignment is a five match series in England, starting from June 20, giving the Indians ample time to a recalibrate and reinvent themselves accordingly, as the pressure piles on Gautam Gambhir to deliver success.
