The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has reached the semi-final stage, with India set to play Australia on Tuesday, followed by South Africa vs New Zealand on Wednesday. The winning teams from these two matches will proceed to the finals on Sunday, March 9. The teams that are eliminated in the semi-finals, though, will not return empty-handed.
How Much Will the Losing Semi-Finalists Earn?
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has allocated a total prize pool of $6.9 million for the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy. This represents a significant 53% increase from the 2017 tournament. While the ultimate champions will take home a hefty $2.24 million (approximately Rs 19.5 crore), the runners-up will be awarded $1.12 million (approximately Rs 9.78 crore).
For the teams that exit at the semi-final stage, the reward is still substantial. Each losing semi-finalist will receive $560,000 (approximately Rs 4.89 crore) as prize money from the ICC.
The ICC Champions Trophy is being staged after an eight-year hiatus, with the last edition held in 2017. On that occasion, Pakistan emerged victorious, defeating India in the final. However, this time around, Pakistan, despite being the official host, failed to progress beyond the group stage.
The tournament initially featured two groups: Group A consisted of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand, while Group B included Australia, South Africa, England, and Afghanistan. Following the group-stage battles, India and New Zealand advanced from Group A, while South Africa and Australia secured semi-final spots from Group B.
With high-stakes semi-final clashes on the horizon — India vs Australia and South Africa vs New Zealand — fans are eagerly anticipating who will move one step closer to lifting the coveted trophy.
The India-Australia semifinal is a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad where Australia upset India and sent the country into mourning.
This time, Australia isn’t at full strength. It is missing its front-line pace attack and opening batter Matt Short has been sidelined by a quad injury, and replaced by left-arm spinner Cooper Connolly.
Connolly’s selection pays respect to Dubai’s spin-friendly pitches. But Australia doesn’t normally bank heavy on spin, and has defied the odds to reach the semifinals under Steve Smith.
India, however, unleashed a fourth extra spinner on New Zealand, and they shared nine wickets as they defended 249 with ease. Whether India stays with four spinners or goes back to three is its main question.
