The Indian cricket team kicked off the ODI series on a promising note and secured a thumping win in the first match. Playing in Nagpur, the hosts clinched a four-wicket victory to earn a 1-0 lead in the series.
Batting first, England posted a total of 248. England skipper Jos Buttler emerged as the highest scorer for his side of the game having produced a vital knock of 52 off 67 balls.
Harshit Rana and Ravindra Jadeja claimed three wickets each for India in the ODI series opener. Shubman Gill came up with a solid innings of 87 runs during the run chase.
Shreyas Iyer was also in fine touch as he scored 59 off 36 balls. Gill and Iyer added 94 runs for the third wicket to secure a solid platform for India. Axar Patel also added 52 runs to the scoreboard to guide India to a comfortable win.
India lost six wickets and scored the winning runs with 68 balls to spare. Saqib Mahmood and Adil Rashid bagged two wickets each for England but that was not enough for the visitors to ensure a win.
India will now be aiming to carry forward the momentum and secure another victory in the second ODI scheduled to be played at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. The second ODI of the series is scheduled to be played on Sunday, February 9.
