India women’s cricket team is set to host Ireland in a three-match ODI series. It marks the first-ever bilateral assignment featuring the two teams. India’s regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been rested for the home series. In her absence, star batter Smriti Mandhana will lead the hosts. Meanwhile, Gaby Lewis will captain Ireland Women in the ODI series, with Orla Prendergast serving as her deputy.
The first women’s ODI between India and Ireland will be played at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on January 10. The remaining two games will be hosted at the same venue on January 12 and 15 respectively.
Indian captain Smriti Mandhana appeared in sublime form in the last two white-ball series against the West Indies. The opening batter aggregated 148 runs in the ODIs, with India registering a 3-0 whitewash. The Women in Blue also won the T20I series where Mandhana struck 193 runs across three matches. She scored five consecutive half-centuries against the West Indies.
Harleen Deol was the top scorer in the ODI series with 160 runs. Renuka Singh finished as the highest wicket-taker with 10 scalps. The Indian pacer will remain absent from the series against Ireland.
In this situation, newcomers like Titas Sadhu and Saima Thakor will need to carry the bowling department along with vice-captain Deepti Sharma. Sadhu has picked three wickets in her ODI career while Thakor has scalped seven in 8 matches.
Eyes will be on Jemimah Rodrigues and Pratika Rawal who also performed brilliantly in the ODIs against the Caribbean unit. Rodrigues recorded 134 runs while Rawal scored 115 across three games.
