Top 10 Overseas Players Who Went Unsold
As many as 182 players bagged lucrative deals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The franchises mostly chased Indian talents, be they uncapped or capped, and thus, some big overseas stars were left stranded. A total of 101 players remained unsold, and a majority of them were foreigners.
Let’s have a look at the top overseas players who failed to attract any buyer in the mega auction:
David Warner: One of the oldest faces in the IPL circuit, former Australia batter David Warner, went unsold in the auction. An IPL-winning former captain, Warner, had registered himself for Rs 2 crore. However, none of the franchises seemed interested in picking him in the two-day event.
Kane Williamson: New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson remained unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction. He featured on the second day; however, he did not find any buyers. Williamson had made his IPL debut in 2015, representing SRH. In 2018, he became the first Kiwi player to win an orange cap in the IPL. He last represented Gujarat Titans.
Jonny Bairstow: The English wicketkeeper-batter joined the list of unsold players on Sunday after none of the franchises expressed interest in having him. After getting released by Punjab Kings, Bairstow registered himself at Rs 2 crore. The Englishman has played 50 IPL matches, for two teams, and has scored 1,589 runs at a strike rate of 144.45.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman: The star Afghan off-spinner, who last represented SRH in 2021, remained unsold in the auction. The 23-year-old began his IPL journey with Punjab Kings before joining Orange Army. The tweaker has played 19 matches and has as many wickets at an economy of 8.18.
Alzarri Joseph: The young West Indies bowler also didn’t find a home at the IPL 2025 auction. Alzarri Joseph’s IPL journey began in 2019 with Mumbai Indians as a replacement for the injured Adam Milne. He made a sensational debut, taking six wickets for 12 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, he went wicketless in his next two games and did not play in the IPL for the next two seasons. In 2022, he joined Gujarat Titans, playing nine matches and claiming seven wickets, contributing to their title victory.
Mustafizur Rahman: The Bangladesh pacer didn’t have a great day at the auction. The left-arm pacer made his debut in 2016 for SRH and went on to represent Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals before joining Delhi Capitals, where he had two underwhelming seasons. Eventually, he found his way to Chennai Super Kings. Across his IPL career, he has taken 61 wickets in 57 matches, at an economy rate of 8.14.
Mohammad Nabi: The Afghan all-rounder was one of the first two Afghans to play in IPL. He began his IPL career in 2017 with Sunrisers Hyderabad before representing Mumbai Indians last season. He has also been a part of KKR but never got to play for them. His IPL career comprises 24 matches, 215 runs, and 15 wickets.
Shai Hope: Known for his hard-hitting skills, Shai Hope was roped in by DC in 2024 but he had tough luck at the mega auction. He had an underwhelming season last year, scoring 183 runs in nine matches at an average of 22.
Sikandar Raza: The Zimbabwe captain, regarded as one of the finest all-rounders in white-ball cricket, remained unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auctions. He joined Punjab Kings for the 2023 IPL and was the first Zimbabwean to hit a half-century in the league but didn’t get many chances to cement his place. He scored 182 runs and took three wickets in nine IPL matches across two seasons.
Dewald Brevis: The South African batter, nicknamed ‘Baby AB’, won’t be seen in IPL 2025. The youngster was signed by Mumbai Indians in 2022 after his exploits in the 2022 ICC U-19 World Cup. In two IPL seasons, he played ten matches, scoring 230 runs at a strike rate of 133.72 and an average of 23.
