Explain IPL mega auction

Every few years, the 10 teams are asked to release majority of their players for the auction. This time, each franchise was allowed to retain at most six players.

What’s the difference?

Essentially the same. At mini auction though, teams are only looking to plug gaps, if any. At the mega auction, they have to rebuild their respective squads.

When will the IPL 2025 mega auction take place?

The mega auction will be held on November 24 and 25.

Where will the IPL 2025 mega auction be held?

The IPL auction will be held in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). This is the second time in history that an IPL auction is being held outside India.

So how many players were retained by the IPL teams?

A combined 46 players have been retained by the 10 IPL teams. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have kept the maximum number – six players each, while Punjab Kings have retained the fewest – two players.

How many slots are available to be filled?

Franchises are aiming to fill 204 available slots. Punjab Kings have the most vacancies (23), followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (22) and Delhi Capitals (21). Other teams like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, and Sunrisers Hyderabad have 20 slots each, while Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals each have 19.

Is there a budget cap?

Each team has a budget cap of Rs 120 crore. However, a significant portion of this amount has already been used to retain players. Punjab Kings have the largest purse of Rs 110.5 crore followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rs 83 crore) and Delhi Capitals (Rs 73 crore). The other teams have varying amounts left, with Rajasthan Royals having the least at Rs 41 crore.

How many players are up for auction?

A total of 1,574 players have registered for the mega auction initially. The list was culled to 574 before three players were added a couple of days. 577 players will go under the hammer.

What is Right To Match (RTM) option?

Right To Match (RTM) option allows a team to match the highest bid for a player who was part of their squad last season. The RTM card has been reintroduced with a modification. The team placing the winning bid will get one final opportunity to raise their offer, and then the original team must decide whether to match the new bid or skip.

The IPL mega auction is expected to get underway from 3:30 PM IST.
