Finally, the wait is over as all 10 franchises have revealed their list of retained players. While the Punjab Kings have made the least retentions – keeping only two uncapped players and releasing the entire squad, the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have retained six each.

Now that all 10 franchises are set to enter the mega auctions, let’s have a look at the 5 surprise retentions:

Yash Dayal (RCB): Since receiving a fast bowling contract from the BCCI, Yash Dayal has risen up the ranks to be on the radar of the Indian selectors. He has very well moved on from the heartbreak he had in IPL 2022 after Rinku Singh smashed him for five sixes in an over. He is one of the three players retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore. He had a fantastic IPL 2023, finishing the season with 15 wickets for the franchise. But his retention comes as a surprise because he has been preferred over someone like Mohammed Siraj, who has been an experienced campaigner for the team.

Abhishek Porel (DC): The Bengal wicketkeeper-batter came into the picture when Rishabh Pant missed out on the entire IPL 2023 due to injury. He has played 18 games for DC and scored 360 runs for the franchise. But what makes his retention surprising is the fact that he has been chosen over Rishabh Pant. Porel has been retained as an uncapped player for INR 4 crore.

Ramandeep Singh (KKR): The Punjab all-rounder simply struck gold with his retention. KKR has shown faith in him and kept him as an uncapped player, spending INR 4 crore. Ramandeep had a memorable IPL 2023, scoring 125 runs in 14 matches at an impressive strike rate of 201.61. As a right-handed batter, he excelled in the finisher role, contributing significantly to the Kolkata Knight Riders’ title-winning campaign this season. His performance earned him a spot in the India A squad for the Emerging Asia Cup.

Mohsin Khan (LSG): LSG’s entire retention list is pretty surprising. They let go of their skipper, KL Rahul, and decided to have four youngsters along with a seasoned overseas campaigner. Mohsin Khan was one of the five players retained by the franchise. The left-arm pacer, often compared with Zaheer Khan, was brought on board for INR 20 lakhs. He has played 23 matches for LSG and picked up 27 wickets, averaging 25.5.

Shahrukh Khan (GT): The Tamil Nadu batter is known for his hard-hitting prowess and made his IPL debut for Punjab Kings in 2021. After three seasons, he moved to Gujarat Titans ahead of 2023 only to cement his place in the team. He has played 40 IPL games, scoring 553 runs at a strike rate of 141.
