As the mega event gets interesting with every player going under the hammer, here are some important terminologies to know. Let’s have a look.
The highly anticipated mega auction for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season is currently underway in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This marks only the second instance of an IPL auction taking place outside India, the first being in 2024 in Dubai.
The highlight of the mega event in Jeddah was Rishabh Pant overtaking Shreyas Iyer to become the most expensive player in IPL history. The wicketkeeper-batter landed in Lucknow Super Giants at Rs 27 crore while Punjab Kings bought Iyer for Rs 26.75 crore. The third-most-expensive player in IPL history is now all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, who returns to KKR at Rs 23.75 crore.
Over the course of two days, a total of 577 players will be up for bidding. Among them are 48 capped Indian players and 193 capped international cricketers, making it a diverse talent pool. With the 10 franchises already retaining 46 players, only 204 slots remain available to be filled. Teams are permitted a maximum of 25 players in their squads, with a restriction of eight overseas players per team.
As the mega event gets interesting with every player going under the hammer, here are some important terminologies to know. Let’s have a look:
What is the RTM card?
Right to Match is a system that allows a team to basically buy back their players during the mega auction. If a team does not name any retentions before the deadline, they will come into the auction with six RTMs. But, if a team does choose to retain in advance, then they will be present with (6 – number of retained players) RTMs when the IPL Mega Auction takes place.
Revisions in the RTM Process
After a team bids on a player and the previous franchise uses an RTM to match the bid, the highest bidder is given one last chance to increase the bid before the player is awarded to the original team using RTM.
What is the accelerated auction?
Although 577 players have been shortlisted for the IPL 2025 auction, not all will go under the hammer. The accelerated auction phase will commence after the 117th player has been presented, transitioning into a faster-paced process. Swastik Chikara, listed at 118, will be the first uncapped player to feature in this phase.
The accelerated auction is divided into two parts. In the first, franchises will submit a list of their preferred players from the remaining pool (players numbered 118 to 577). These selected names will then be presented for bidding. The second part will focus on players who either remained unsold or were not presented during the initial phase of the accelerated auction. This streamlined process allows franchises to target specific players while maintaining efficiency in the proceedings.
