Let us take a look at the players each franchise decided to keep/acquire ahead of the IPL 2022 auction and where they stand now.
As franchises come close to Deadline Day, teams will have to finalise their retentions for the upcoming 2025 season’s mega-auction.
Each team had a total purse of up to INR 90 crores with each side, with the franchise eligible to retain up to four players which can include a maximum of 3 Indians, 2 overseas players and 2 uncapped Indians.
It is also to be noted that both Gujarat Titans and the Lucknow Super Giants were created as the newest franchises to add to the league. Both franchises acquired a total of three players each.
Let us now take a look at whom each franchise decided to retain/acquire ahead of the IPL 2022 auctions and see if some of those players could extend their stay with the franchise.
Punjab Kings
PBKS’ Retained Players for IPL 2022: Mayank Agarwal (12 cr), Arshdeep Singh (4 cr)
Where Are They Now?
The Punjab Kings maintain their reputation of being an underperforming franchise. As for their retentions, Mayank Agarwal was released in the very next season for his shortcomings as a leader and a player. As for Arshdeep Singh, he managed to become one of their best bowlers who went on to represent the national team in their T20 World Cup-winning campaign in 2024 as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.
Lucknow Super Giants
LSG’s Player Retentions for IPL 2022: KL Rahul (17 cr), Marcus Stoinis (9.2 cr), Ravi Bishnoi (4 cr)
Where Are They Now?
The Lucknow Super Giants had a fine start to their journey in the IPL. But their positive run came to an end as they suffered in the 2024 campaign by not making it to the playoffs. As for their 2022 retentions, KL Rahul led the side for all three seasons while the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi were mainstays in the side as well. However, their futures will now be in question with the franchise reportedly looking to release the skipper and head into a new direction, with hopes of winning that maiden title.
Gujarat Titans
GT’s Acquired Players for IPL 2022: Hardik Pandya (15 cr), Rashid Khan (15 cr), Shubman Gill (8 cr)
Where Are They Now?
The 2022 IPL champions underwent massive change following the skipper, Hardik Pandya’s sensational return to Mumbai Indians. The young star, Shubman Gill was handed the reins to lead the franchise while Rashid Khan looked to continue doing what he does best, however, the previous season failed to match their expectations as they finished eighth, their lowest finish in the IPL.
Delhi Capitals
DC’s Player Retentions for IPL 2022: Rishabh Pant (16 cr), Axar Patel (9 cr), Prithvi Shaw (7.5 cr), Anrich Nortje (6.5 cr)
Where Are They Now?
The Delhi Capitals have suffered since the 2022 auctions. Since the 2022 auctions, they have been unable to make it to the playoffs let alone push for a title charge. The absence of Rishabh Pant for the 2023 season was a massive blow to the side, however, his return did not change the side’s fortunes. As for their retention, the likes of Axar Patel continue to play a big role in the side. But Prithvi Shaw and Anrich Nortje who had prominent roles in the side, saw themselves being out of favour.,
Rajasthan Royals
RR’s Player Retentions for IPL 2022: Sanju Samson (14 cr), Jos Buttler (10 cr), Yashasvi Jaiswal (4 cr)
Where Are They Now?
The Rajasthan Royals impressed many with their retention picks and their performances of late as they found themselves to be a side that made it to the playoffs. Their retained trio of skippers, Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal had fairly influential periods with the franchise with many memorable knocks. However, the future of the England skipper remains in doubt with many injury concerns of late which could see him being phased out of the side.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru
RCB’s Player Retentions for IPL 2022: Virat Kohli (15 cr), Glenn Maxwell (11 cr), Mohammed Siraj (7 cr)
Where Are They Now?
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru have continued to entertain many of the IPL fans with their drama-filled seasons. However, their wait for that maiden IPL title continues with the side lacking the consistency to ensure that they can go all the way. The trio of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj continue to be with the franchise, but they could look to go in a different direction with Maxwell and Siraj being released.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
SRH’s Retained Players for IPL 2022: Kane Williamson (14 cr), Abdul Samad (4 cr), Umran Malik (4 cr)
Where Are They Now?
The Sunrisers Hyderabad have undergone massive changes when it comes to the players and their identity. The likes of Kane Williamson were not in the side for long as he made the move to Gujarat Titans in the 2023 season. Umran Malik also saw himself out of action as the side bolstered the squad with the likes of Pat Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen and Travis Head all of whom brought in a newfound identity to the side which has now taken the tournament by storm.
Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR’s Player Retentions for IPL 2022: Andre Russell (12 cr), Varun Chakravarthy (8 cr), Venkatesh Iyer (8 cr), Sunil Narine (6 cr)
Where Are They Now?
The two-time champions managed to add a third to their tally in the 2024 season. The return of Gautam Gambhir to the franchise as a mentor saw Narine go back up to the top of the order while Andre Russell brought in his best form with both bat and ball. Venkatesh Iyer also found his touch in the middle order while Varun Chakravarthy rediscovered his magic to become the leading wicket-taker last year.
Chennai Super Kings
CSK’s Player Retentions for IPL 2022: Ravindra Jadeja (16 cr), MS Dhoni (12 cr), Moeen Ali(8 cr), Ruturaj Gaikwad (6 cr)
Where Are They Now?
Following the 2022 auction, the franchise managed to add one more title to their tally in the 2024 season. Many expected MS Dhoni’s career in the IPL to come to an end but it seems like the legendary keeper continues to play for the franchise. In terms of the leadership structure, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been promoted as the captain of the side with Jadeja also playing a big role as well. However, Moeen Ali seems to have found himself .out of favour in the side, with the addition of Rachin Ravindra.
Mumbai Indians
MI’s Player Retentions for IPL 2022: Rohit Sharma (16 cr), Jasprit Bumrah (12 cr), Suryakumar Yadav (8 cr), Kieron Pollard (6 cr)
Where Are They Now?
The five-time champions saw a massive change in the leadership structure with Hardik Pandya being brought into the side as their new skipper for the 2023 season. Kieron Pollard decided to call time on his career after the 2022 season. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav continue to thrive in the franchise as they are arguably the best bowlers and batters respectively.
