The IPL Governing Council had revised the retention rules earlier this year. The updated policy permits teams to retain a maximum of six players. The final list must not exceed five capped and two uncapped players. Another significant aspect of the new retention rule is the provision for a capped player to be retained as an uncapped cricketer if they have not participated in an international match in the preceding five years. This rule, previously abolished by the board, was recently reinstated and applies exclusively to Indian players. Its reintroduction sparked controversy, with some suggesting it was tailored to facilitate the Chennai Super Kings’ retention of MS Dhoni for another season. The auction purse for IPL 2025 has been raised by 20 percent from its previous limit of Rs 100 crore in 2024. The augmented purse stands at Rs 120 crore, with the salary cap set at Rs 146 crore.
