The Chennai Super Kings were on the verge of qualifying for the playoffs last season but were stunned by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). In the final league match against the Faf du Plessis-led side, left-arm quick Yash Dayal defended 35 runs off the final six balls despite being hit for a huge six by the legendary MS Dhoni. CSK needed 17 runs to qualify, but Dayal denied them victory. RCB won the contest by 27 runs and qualified for the playoffs. CSK were knocked out, finishing fifth in the points table.
