The opening day of the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia was an action-packed affair. The day began with Sam Konstas justifying the hype around him by peeling off an aggressive half-century, an innings that included a reverse-scoop off Jasprit Bumrah for six. Then there was confrontation with Virat Kohli after the two shoulder-bumped while crossing over.

Australian top-order led a solid start with Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith hitting half-centuries. However, the in-form Travis Head made a seven-ball duck. With Australia dominating the first session, Bumrah led a strong fightback from India before the conclusion of an absorbing day.

Meanwhile, India captain Roht Sharma handed some harsh lessons to his young teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal who was fielding at silly point.

Gully cricket khel raha hai kya? (Are you playing gully cricket?),” an annoyed Rohit yelled at Jaiswal who he felt was taking evasive action prematurely.

Niche baith ke rah, jab tak ball khelega nahi, uthne ka nahi (Till he plays a shot, don’t get up. Stay low.),” Rohit added.

Smith was unbeaten on 68 at stumps as Australia reached 311/6 in 86 overs.

Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first as a record crowd of 87,242 attended the opening day’s play at the MCG.

Konstas and Khawaja led a rapid start and the pair added 89 runs before being separated.  It was the 19-year-old Konstas who dominated the opening partnership, hitting 60 off 65.

Ravindra Jadeja provided the first breakthrough for India when he had the debutant trapped LBW in the 20th over. Labuschagne (72) and Khawaja (57) build on the strong foundation with a 65-run partnership for the second wicket.

Smith, who returned to form with a century in Brisbane, joined forces with Khawaja and the pair stitched an 83-run partnership as Indian bowlers continued to toil.

Washington Sundar broke the partnership with the scalp of Labuschagne before Bumrah struck twice in quick succession to lead India’s fightback.
