Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn has said that a century from Virat Kohli in his 300th ODI would be a magical one, saying that it looks like it is written for him to play a big knock in the milestone match.
Kohli will be playing his 300th game in ODIs on Sunday, March 2, against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy in Dubai.
Kohli is fresh from a brilliant hundred against his favourite opposition in the earlier game as he played a stunning innings of 100* to guide India home in a 242-run chase against Pakistan.
“It is written, isn’t it? For Virat, 300 ODIs and a hundred in his 300 would be magical to see. But I think India would want to go into that game just to play their best cricket, as with New Zealand, I think,” Steyn said while speaking on Star Sports.
“Then, the semi-finalists are now decided; it just depends on who goes where right now. But from Virat’s point of view, he’ll look to continue that good form that he had from the previous game where he scored 100 and hopefully do a replica again in the semi-final and get Team Blue India into another final,” Steyn added.
The former South Africa pacer said that Kohli would be eyeing another ICC title and looking forward to playing a match-winning knock to lead his team to another title, much like the T20 World Cup last year.
“300 ODIs is huge, and the hunger that he shows to continue growing his game and getting better and never being demoralised by anything is pretty incredible. He scored 100 the other day, it shows that he’s still hungry to score runs and do well for his country,” Steyn said.
“Kohli won the World Cup last year against South Africa, the T20 World Cup in Barbados, and I’m sure another tournament where he wants to go all the way. So, 300 ODIs- congratulations, Virat Kohli, but he has a bigger goal in mind. He needs to beat New Zealand, beat the semi-final and win another final for India,” Steyn added.
Kohli’s last outing against New Zealand resulted in a win for India, where he scored his 50th ODI hundred, going past batting legend Sachin Tendulkar in the semifinals of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
