RCB’s Head Coach, Andy Flower revealed that the side has yet to discuss anything regarding their new captain for IPL 2025.
The Head Coach of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru clarified the ongoing rumours that Virat Kohli may reprise his role as skipper ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.
With Faf du Plessis’ exit, the franchise is in search of a new skipper and reports have suggested that Kohli would be leading the franchise once again. But Andy Flower revealed that they are yet to discuss anything for the upcoming season.
“Well, you’re going to have to wait for the outcome. It’s a new era that we are going into, the start of a three-year cycle, and I’m sure the anticipation will be good for you,” Flower was quoted by SportsTak ahead of the third season of the ILT20.
“You can ask me as often as you like, but that communication has not happened yet,” Flower clarified.
Kohli’s captaincy journey with the franchise began in 2013 and took them to a final in the 2016 edition. But after the 2021 season, the iconic batter decided to step down from the role. However, he has been the captain on occasions when the designated skipper was not available.
He had stepped in when du Plessis had picked up an injury, forcing him to come on as an impact substitute in the 2023 season. Despite not being the official captain, Kohli remains an influential figure in the dressing room, always being involved in key discussions for the franchise or the national team.
Kohli has been under the spotlight recently with his poor batting form. Despite scoring a century in the opening Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he was not able to get a big score as the Indian team went on to lose the series 1-3. However, Kohli’s IPL record of late has been a big positive. He finished as the season’s highest run-scorer with 741 runs from 15 games.
The Bengaluru-based franchise made some major additions to their squad in the recently concluded mega-auctions. They picked up the likes of Phil Salt, Krunal Pandya, Liam Livingstone, Tim David, Josh Hazlewood and more. The side will hope that the new additions with a good leader can help end their longstanding wait for a maiden IPL title.
