Following India’s whitewash at the hands of New Zealand in the recently concluded three-match Test series, questions were asked regarding Gautam Gambhir and his coaching staff who are now under pressure to get the team firing again. But the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, feels that the coaches are still getting to understand the players and figure out how they operate.

Following the third Test defeat, Rohit suggested that all was well between the team and the coaching staff, indicating that it was the lack of performance from the players and it was their responsibility to step up when the side needed it.

“Yes, the coaching staff have been good. They have just come in. It’s not been a lot of time for them. They are also understanding how this team operates, and how the player operates. This is obviously a first Test series loss in the two Test series that they have been,” said the Indian captain in the post-match press conference.

Rohit also commented on the difficulties for the coaches to come in and get the team going right away when there are so many players who have their own method of operating.

“Look, it’s the players’ responsibility to make their job or make their life easier because it’s never easy for anyone to come in and start, doing what they are doing, you know, because there are a lot of different individuals here and they operate slightly differently,” Rohit suggested.

The skipper also highlighted how it was important for the players to know themselves first and also align themselves with what the coaches have in mind as Rohit feels it is too early to make a judgement on Gambhir and co who, according to him, have been good with the players.

“So, it’s important for the players to make sure that they know what they are, what the thought process is of the coaching staff to align on those thought processes and, you know, take it forward. Like I said, it’s been only four or five months now, too early to judge anything, but they have been good with the players,” he added.

The Indian side is under pressure after suffering a 0-3 whitewash on home soil. The Indian batters have not been up to par and have exposed their vulnerabilities to spin-bowling as Gambhir faces pressure to get the team up to speed ahead of their next assignment in Australia.
