Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a story in which he hit back at interim Pakistan head coach Aaqib Javed for his role in removing him as the head coach of the Pakistan men’s Test cricket team last year. Gillespie was appointed as red-ball coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team in April 2024, but in less than eight months, he parted ways with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
More than three months after his exit, Gillespie finally broke his silence and slammed Javed. According to him, Aaqib undermined him (Gillespie) and Gary Kirsten and campaigned behind the scenes against them to become the head coach in all formats of the Pakistan men’s cricket team.
“This is hilarious. Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and I behind the scenes campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown,” Gillespie wrote.
Gillespie’s reaction came after former fast bowler Javed blamed PCB’s frequent changes in coaching staff and selectors over the past few years for the team’s poor performance in the Champions Trophy 2025.
“We changed 16 coaches in the last 2.5 years and 26 selectors. If you do this to any team around the world, their performance will be like this too,” Aaqib said.
In addition to Gillespie, Pakistan also appointed Gary Kirsten as the head coach of white-ball teams in April 2024, but the former India head coach resigned from his role in October 2024. During his time as head coach, Pakistan played in the T20 World Cup 2024 and suffered back-to-back defeats against the USA and India in the first two matches.
