Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja on the last ball of the 11th over of Australia’s first innings in the ongoing pink-ball Test at Adelaide Oval to complete his 50 Test wickets in 2024.
Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah joined legendary Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan in an elite list of Indian fast bowlers on Friday (December 6). The right-arm fast bowler, who is celebrating his 31st birthday on Friday, became the third Indian pacer after Kapil and Zaheer to dismiss 50 Test batters in a calendar year. Bumrah completed 50 dismissals by taking Usman Khawaja’s wicket.
The left-handed opening batter was caught in the slips by Indian captain Rohit Sharma on the last ball of the 11th over of Australia’s first innings.
Kapil was the first Indian pacer to take 50 wickets in a calendar year. He played 17 Tests for India in 1979 and got rid of 74 batters. At that time, it was the record for taking the most wickets in a calendar year in Tests. Kapil improved his tally in 1983 by getting rid of 75 batters in 18 Tests.
Zaheer joined Kapil in the elite list by getting the better of 51 batters in 15 Tests for India in 2002.
The overall record for taking the most wickets in a calendar year by a fast bowler is in the name of former Australian pacer Dennis Lillee. Lillee played 13 Tests for the Baggy Greens in 1981 and picked up 85 wickets.
Apart from Kapil and Zaheer, Anil Kumble (74, 57, 54), Ravichandran Ashwin (72, 62, 56, 54), Harbhajan Singh (63, 63, 60), Ravindra Jadeja (54), Bhagwath Chandrasekhar (52), and Vinoo Mankad (51) have also picked up more than 50 Test wickets in a calendar year for India.
